5 Tips to Make Your Hair Color Last Longer

Updated: Nov 15, 2021

Getting your hair colored, although a significant commitment, is a quick and easy way to switch up your look. But keeping your hair color looking fresh and fabulous? That’s a different story altogether. Dyed hair requires quite a bit of upkeep. You not only have to bleach the roots at least once a month but also make sure that your hair remains healthy despite the chemicals that are used. But even after all of that, there are still a ton of issues that you might face, including dull ends and faded roots. While you cannot put off retouching your strands forever, there are a few things you can do to keep your hair color vibrant and glossy.

With just a few adjustments to your haircare routine, you can maintain your beautiful hair color for a long time. Here are some of them:

1. Do not wash your hair too frequently.

The more you wash your hair, the quicker your hair color will fade. So, if you have a habit of washing every day, it is time to stop. Reduce the frequency to two or three times a week. If your hair feels oily, use a dry shampoo. Also, if you have freshly colored hair, wait at least three days before washing it so that there is enough time for the dye to settle.

2. Use a sulfate-free shampoo.

Sulfates and colored hair do not go together. Found in a number of shampoos, these cleaning agents can make your hair color fade faster than normal. Always use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that will clean your hair without affecting the color. You can also find shampoos that are specially formulated for colored hair and work to protect the color and keep it looking nice and vibrant.

3. Turn down the temperature of the shower.

Do you love taking a bath in scalding water? You might want to know that the heat from the shower can accelerate the color fade in your hair. The heat opens up the cuticles in your hair to open up, which, in turn, results in the color molecules getting rinsed down. Hot water should especially be avoided by people with red hair because red dyes pose a higher risk of fading and dulling over time.

4. Use a deep conditioner.

Colored hair is more fragile. Deep conditioning will keep the strands moisturized and prevent the color from fading. Use a hair mask at least twice or thrice a month. You can use a hydrating mask or a strengthening mask, depending on your hair type and need.

5. Use heat protection.

While it is best to completely avoid heat styling, in case you do plan on using your straightener or curling iron, apply a heat protection spray. It will reduce heat damage but remember that it will not provide complete insulation against it.
